The Snowy Mountain Scheme
The Snowy is and has been considered as an engineering wonder. Although it took 25 years to build the hard work was worth it. In 1949 over 100 000 men and women came to Australia to look and rebuild a new life. Because of WWII the towns were destroyed and there were no jobs for the people over in the Europe countries. This is when the Snowy Mountain Scheme idea was created because of the population was increased and there would be more jobs. Before this idea was created Australia was in poor state because of the many droughts they had, they couldn’t grow food for everyone. The Snowy River was also flowing straight out to sea. People had ideas for the Snowy Mountain Scheme to build dams and change the path of the river so it wouldn’t flow out to sea. Towns like Tallangatta had to be moved across because of the Snowy River’s new path.
As for the people of the scheme. Over 100 temporary camps were created for the people as big as Wodonga. The men of the scheme always went off to the mountain early in the morning to work there. The men weren’t the only people had to work, so did the women and children at home, fixing the house and cooking for the family but most men left their families back home in Europe. Life on the scheme was very tough and money was hard to earn. The leaders of the project were on a tight budget to complete what will be the most major achievements in the 20th century. 70% of the people working on the scheme were migrants and 120 (10%) died working on the scheme. Many tunnels and dams were built that caused most of the workers deaths.
After 25 years of hard work. The project of the snowy mountain scheme was complete. Sixteen major dams were built and seven power stations were also created. A water pumping station was built. 225 kilometres of tunnels, pipelines and aqueducts were built and only 2% of it is visible above ground. It covers an area of 5 124 square miles in New South Whales.
The major input of the Snow Mountain Scheme is water. In the mountains when spring comes the snow melts and the water runs into the dams. It then is sucked into the tunnels at the bottom of the dams. The pipes then transfer the water into the turbines which spin the water so fast that it creates electricity. The water is sent down the pipes again to the irrigation for the farmers.
The outputs of the scheme are electricity and water. The electricity that is created with the turbines spinning the water around. The electricity is sent off through the power lines to provide homes with electricity to do their daily needs. This type of electricity is pollution free! The water is used after creating electricity for farmers down by the Murray. This is called irrigation. Before the scheme was created Australia was in drought because the water in the rivers was evaporated so quickly. Now that the Snowy River has been changed and the Snowy Mountain Scheme was created. Australia is a populated, healthy better place.
